How to Calculate Masonry

When it comes to building walls, knowing how to calculate the right amount of bricks, cement, and sand is essential to ensure your project stays on track and within budget. In brick masonry, these materials are the building blocks of your construction. Here's a quick guide on how to calculate them accurately.

Measure the Wall of Masonry

Start by measuring the length, height, and thickness of the wall you intend to build. Make sure to use consistent units of measurement, such as metres or feet.

Calculate the Volume of masonry

To find the volume of the wall, multiply the length, height, and thickness together. This will give you the total cubic units (e.g., cubic metres or cubic feet) of your wall.

Determine the Brick Size

Next, identify the size of the bricks you plan to use. Common brick sizes include standard (190mm x 90mm x 90mm) and modular (200mm x 100mm x 75mm). These dimensions are the length, width, and height of one brick.

Calculate the Number of Bricks

To find the number of bricks needed for your wall, divide the wall's volume by the volume of one brick. Remember to account for mortar joints. The formula is:

Number of Bricks = (Volume of Wall / Volume of One Brick) + Wastage

Wastage is typically added to account for bricks that may break during construction or for cuts at the ends of rows.

Calculate the Cement,Sand in Masonry

Cement

The amount of cement required depends on the type of mortar mix you'll use. A common mix is 1:6, which means one part cement to six parts sand. To calculate the cement required, multiply the number of bricks by the cement-sand ratio (1/7 in this case) and divide by the sum of the ratio's parts (1+6). The formula is:

Cement Required = (Number of Bricks * 1/7) / (1+6)

Sand

Similar to cement, the amount of sand needed depends on the mortar mix. In a 1:6 mix, you'll need six parts of sand for every part of cement. Use the same number of bricks calculated earlier and apply the ratio. The formula is:

Sand Required = (Number of Bricks * 6/7) / (1+6)
